Employer liable for theft of employee's belongings?
Questioner
My son works in the hospitality industry and was robbed while he was working. All valuables had to be put in a lockable safe of the employer. That is where he left his phone, earphones, debit card and ID, coat, bag and keys. After his shift everything appeared to have disappeared from the safe together with the electric bike that was in front of the door. The employer says he cannot help because there is no camera footage of the specific location. Is the employer in any way responsible for replacement? The total damage is about 1600 euros. We are reporting it to the police, but what else can we do?Lawyer
It is possible that your son has a claim against the employer, but in order to be able to assess this properly, all facts and circumstances should be considered and weighed. Perhaps your son can be assisted pro bono in this matter.
