Right to more alimony from my father?

Questioner

I turned 18 in December and now my father has asked me to tell him what I need in terms of living expenses. I have no contact with my father and so I have written him a letter about what I think I need. Now I got an answer that I will only get €162 from him, because that is legally required. Why do I have to tell him what I need? Can I possibly contest this because I really can't cope with this?

Lawyer

If you have turned 18, you are entitled to alimony from your father until you are 21, unless you are still studying or following a training course, in which case the alimony can be extended until you are 25. The amount of the alimony is determined by the court and depends on various factors, such as your father's income and your own financial situation. From the age of 18, there may be a greater need for child support, so the amount can indeed be increased if you can indicate what your need for alimony is. It is advisable to consult a lawyer to assess whether you are entitled to more alimony and how best to apply for it.
