How do I get out of a contract?

I have a contractor who was going to pour sand into my crawl space, it involved 16 cubic meters of sand. I had placed an advertisement on homedeal and this man called to ask if he could come over and draw up a contract which I agreed to and signed. Then he wanted €200 which I thought was strange but I gave €100. Then he wanted half the amount, which I did. A week later he wanted the whole amount, no matter what I did otherwise he wouldn't come he said. He was supposed to come on Saturday, March 18, but nobody showed up. Now he wants 21% of the whole amount otherwise he won't come. I'm fed up with the man and want to get rid of him.
