Consequences of remarriage for child support?

Questioner

I got divorced last year and my ex-wife told me yesterday that she is getting remarried (date not yet known). Now I pay about 3/4 of the child support into the child account and she gets the entire child support deposited into her account. I'm curious about the consequences of remarriage in terms of alimony and child support.

When your ex-wife remarries, she will have a new partner who may contribute to the household expenses and childcare. This may mean that the needs of the children will change and less child support will be required. You and your ex-wife must first discuss the new situation in mutual consultation and make agreements about possible adjustments to child support. This can be done, for example, through a mediator or through the judge. If no agreement can be reached, you as the paying parent can file a request to change the child support with the court. The judge will look at the new situation, including the income and the ability to pay of your ex-wife and her new partner. As far as child benefit is concerned, nothing will change in principle. Child benefit is paid to the parent with whom the children are registered. In your case, that seems to be your ex-wife. I recommend that you talk to your ex-wife about her intention to remarry and discuss what this means for child support. If you cannot reach an agreement, you can hire an attorney to help you file a request to modify child support.
