Child support training?
Questioner
My husband's daughter will be 18 in December and will soon start a BBL training. Since the communication between both parents is not good, I would like to ask via this route whether we are obliged to pay alimony after her 18th birthday? We now pay 300 euros per month and daughter still lives at home with her mother.Lawyer
In the Dutch legal system, the legal obligation to pay child support does not automatically end when the child turns 18. After reaching the age of 18, the maintenance obligation is converted into a contribution to the costs of living and study, also referred to as the 'contribution to the costs of living and study' (hereinafter: the 'study contribution'). The amount of the study contribution depends on various factors, including the child's needs and the parents' ability to pay. It is possible that the child's needs will change when the child starts working or following a course of study. In addition, the parents' ability to pay may change, for example if the financial situation of one of the parents changes. You are therefore still obliged to pay alimony until the age of 21.
