Do clients have a payment obligation?

I am a self-employed person and worked 5.25 hours at a company. Due to the circumstances there and the fact that I started to feel ill, I indicated both there and at my employment agency that I did not want to continue. Now I have sent an invoice with that number of hours and with the mileage allowance and they refuse to pay. Do they have a payment obligation or are they allowed to do this? They say that because they could not simply find someone else for the rest of the week, they do not want to pay.
