Deposit refund?

I have my own business, I design clothes. I always ask for a deposit in connection with materials and that the customer continues with me. The customer backed out at the very last minute while I was still able to deliver. They are now asking for the deposit back. I don't think this is right. I am now suffering a lot of damage.
