Contract not extended due to stress and reported sick; should I now apply for benefits or not?
Questioner
My boss did not renew my contract, I was already feeling unwell and because of this news I unfortunately reported myself sick due to stress. My boss is 16 days late in notifying me that my contract will not be renewed. I am registered with the company doctor, but in 2 weeks I will no longer have any income. Should I apply for benefits now or not? because I am currently reported sick.Lawyer
I understand that this is an uncertain time for you. Depending on your situation, you may be eligible for benefits. We generally recommend that you apply for benefits to be on the safe side if you are unsure about your income. However, there are different types of benefits and in your case, multiple benefits seem to apply, such as sickness benefit and unemployment benefit. If you are ill at the time your temporary employment ends, you may be eligible for a Sickness Benefits Act benefit from the UWV. It is important to report your illness to the UWV within a week after your employment has ended. On the other hand: if your contract has expired and you are healthy, you can apply for unemployment benefits at the UWV. You must submit this application no later than one week after your last working day. Please note: This advice is based on general regulations and may differ depending on your specific situation.
